Student-parent Is Living Her Dreams with Help from MCC, Bank of America

A single parent of three young children, Syre Sampel is among the students in MCC's certified nurse assistant program who received financial support to start and complete her education and training. She will soon take the state certification exam to practice full time at Monroe Community Hospital. She is building a more secure future for herself and her family, thanks to a $100,000 grant from the Bank of America Foundation recently awarded to the MCC Foundation.

As told by Dr. Marcy Lynch, director of health care programs at the Downtown Campus:

Syre has always wanted to be in health care. She was taking medical assisting courses and was about to graduate from Everest Institute Rochester when it permanently closed. To make ends meet, she held jobs she disliked, working two jobs at a time and caring for family members.

Her sister, who already completed MCC's CNA program, encouraged Syre to look into the training program. Soon after, Syre became employed at Monroe Community Hospital, earning a salary while taking classes.

Syre's journey and achievements at MCC as a single mom are captured in a Spectrum News 1 report, Grant helps MCC expand nursing program to more students.
