Placement Testing Update: Next Generation Accuplacer is Here

After over a year of collaborative efforts from many branches of the College, including Computing, Registration, Academic Services, and Institutional Research, we are launching Next Generation Accuplacer tests for placement.

What is Next Generation Accuplacer?

The College Board, the entity which designs and manages the Accuplacer exam, has designed the Next Generation Accuplacer in order to be the most up-to-date tool to measure incoming students' proficiencies in Reading, Writing, and Mathematics.

New features of the test include:

  • A greater focus on a range of content areas, text complexity, and writing modes;
  • Ability to assess rhetoric, synthesis, and vocabulary skills;
  • Longer text (up to 400 words) and paired text;
  • Shift to more authentic tasks such as revising and editing within a wide range of texts; and,
  • Math content aligned to state college and career readiness standards.

How will this affect students?

Beginning Monday, October 8, 2018, students taking the placement exam will be taking the Next Generation version of the Accuplacer exam. The subtest names are different, and the score ranges will be different. However, placement levels are staying the same. Also, the new Next Generation test has the same look and adaptive nature of the Classic Accuplacer.

What is staying the same?

Students who are testing for ATB (Ability-to-Benefit) purposes will continue using the Classic version of the Accuplacer. The diagnostic version of the exam will also remain in "Classic" mode.

Where can I find more information?

You can find more information about the test (including sample questions) and how MCC is implementing Next Generation Accuplacer in the M Drive.
