Attention Faculty: A Unique Collaborative and Global Learning Opportunity for Your Students

Faculty, here is a chance for your students to collaborate on a group project that is global in scope and local in implementation. In 2020, MCC students will have an opportunity to join the ongoing, SUNY-wide (and global) conversation on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by transforming an MCC Libraries study room into a source of information and inspiration for MCC students, faculty, and staff. The SDGs focus on issues such as the environment, health, education, equality, and peace. (More details below.)

There are 17 study rooms available for this project in the LeRoy V. Good Library on the Brighton Campus. Each room will feature one SDG and will be utilized by one group of students (e.g., a class or a club). The goal is to offer information about the SDG in that space and to include a call to action. How this occurs is up to the responsible group. For example, one group may decide to create and hang a series of informative posters, while another group may prefer to display artwork, photographs, or other objects. There are many possible approaches--how the room is transformed is up to the participants, as long as the room retains its unimpeded functionality as a study room for student use. (No permanent or semi-permanent changes, such as paint or other markings, are permitted unless approved in advance by library administration.)

In addition to the physical display, there will also be an associated website where students will provide more information to the MCC community and beyond. The initiative will remain in place at least through the end of 2020, and the resulting self-guided tour of the 17 SDGs will be featured in MCC's observance of International Education Week in November 2020.

The 17 SDGs address:

  1. No Poverty
  2. Zero Hunger
  3. Good Health and Well-Being
  4. Quality Education
  5. Gender Equality
  6. Clean Water and Sanitation
  7. Affordable and Clean Energy
  8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
  9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  10. Reduced Inequalities
  11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
  12. Responsible Consumption and Production
  13. Climate Action
  14. Life below Water
  15. Life on Land
  16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
  17. Partnerships for the Goals

More information about these goals is available at https://sustainabledevelopment.un.org/. We can provide assistance with conducting research on the SDG topic.
