Beware of Phishing

One way cyber criminals spread viruses is by sending out phishing emails that try to get the recipient to take an action that infects their computer. Be vigilant and do not open links or attachments in suspicious emails.

Targeted spear-phishing emails can appear to be from another MCC employee, such as a VP, chair or department head, but are not. If the email appears to be from another employee at MCC, but contains the yellow warning banner that says it did not originate from the MCC Employee Email system, then it is not from that person.

On the other hand, sometimes sophisticated email attacks get through without triggering the banner, so if the banner is missing do not assume that the email was sent from an internal sender. If you get an email that is an unusual request, call that employee to verify before clicking on anything in an email.

How do you avoid getting caught in a phishing attempt? Simply delete suspicious emails!

There is no need to call the Technology Support help desk or to forward phishing emails to the "spamsubmission" email account as long as you have not clicked on a link or attachment. Just delete it.

If you have clicked on a real phishing email and it infects your PC, then call the Technology Support team at 292-TECH, option 3.

If a student forwards you a suspicious email or has technology questions, have them contact the Student Technology Helpdesk at technologyhelp@student.monroecc.edu
