Large Audience, Media Turn Out for Panel Talk on Race Relations

Several news media outlets covered a Brighton Campus panel discussion, “What’s in a Hoodie?”, that focused on race relations in America on Thursday, Sept. 26, as part of MCC’s Dialogues on Diversity program. More than 200 people attended the event.

Four panelists, including Rochester Police Chief James Sheppard, discussed race relations in the U.S. in the aftermath of the Trayvon Martin case. Joining Sheppard on the panel were the Rev. Lawrence Hargrave, pastor of outreach ministries at Asbury First United Methodist Church in Rochester; Natasha Christensen, MCC sociology instructor; and Jonathan Iuzzini, coordinator of MCC’s Teaching and Creativity Center. Karen Morris, MCC distinguished professor of business administration and a Brighton town justice, served as moderator.

Sponsored by the Office of Student Life and Leadership Development, the event aimed to encourage meaningful dialogues on race and inspire positive change in the local community.

The event received news coverage from News 10NBC, WXXI News and The Daily Record in addition to the following:
