Passing of James Hart, Professor Emeritus of Math

The College family mourns the passing of Professor Emeritus of Mathematics James "Jim" A. Hart on Feb. 8, 2021.

He joined MCC in 1965 as a part-time assistant professor of mathematics and rose through the ranks during his tenure.

"He was one of the most popular professors at MCC, always smiling and much admired and respected by the way he quietly led," said Jann Avery, chair of the Mathematics Department.

His service to the College included tutoring students in the Math Learning Center, supporting adjunct faculty, sitting on a dozen committees including as chair of the Mathematics Tenure Committee, and serving as co-chair of the United Way fundraising campaign.

Upon his retirement in 1998 after 32 years of service, he was accorded the rank of professor emeritus.

A Navy veteran, Professor Hart graduated from University of Dayton with an associate of applied science degree and later with a master's degree. He earned a bachelor's degree from St. John Fisher College.

He is survived by wife Mary, five children, five grandsons, a sister, and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held on Feb. 12 at Holy Cross Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions in Professor Hart's name may be made to Holy Childhood, 100 Groton Parkway, Rochester, NY 14623-4589 or to Honor Flight Rochester, P.O. Box 23581, Rochester, NY 14692.

Professor Hart's obituary is available online. He will be deeply missed.
