Dean Jacobs Appointed to Modern Language Association's (MLA) Community College Committee

Dr. Michael Jacobs, Dean, Humanities & Social Sciences, has been appointed to the Modern Language Association’s (MLA) Community College Committee (CCC). One of nine MLA committees focused on professional issues, the CCC consider a range of matters that affect modern language and literature faculty in two-year colleges, including “conditions of employment, staffing, curriculum, articulation with secondary schools and four-year institutions, the preparation and recruitment of faculty, and the encouragement of scholarship about teaching in the community college.” With over 23,000 members in 145 countries, the MLA is one of the world’s largest scholarly organizations.

Dean. Jacobs was also selected to participate in the American Council of Learned Societies’ Design Workshop for the New Academy. The project, which includes a dozen individual participants and teams from six schools (the College of William and Mary, the University of Pittsburgh, Stonybrook University, Washington University in St. Louis, the University of California at Davis, and the University of California at Santa Cruz) endeavors to sustain the humanities and humanistic social sciences in American higher education by expanding the definition of scholarship and scholarly achievement, developing improved and more inclusive practices in faculty recruitment and evaluation, better engaging today's diverse community of undergraduates, and increasing public understanding of humanities-focused work.
