Passing of Eugene Coon, retired director of campus security

I am sad to inform the college community that Eugene Coon, retired director of campus safety, passed away on Sunday, March 25 at the age of 84.

Gene led MCC's campus security department for 20 years. He was hired in 1968 as supervisor of campus security and was awarded faculty rank in 1970. On his retirement in 1988, he held the rank of professor and the title of director of campus safety. Gene worked for the Rochester Police Department for 10 years before beginning his employment at MCC.

He was an Army veteran, serving in the Korean War.

Gene was an MCC and RIT alumnus, earning an associate's degree in police science from MCC and a bachelor's degree in criminal justice from RIT.

Services and interment will be held in Tampa, FL at a later date. Gene's obituary is slated to appear in the Democrat and Chronicle on Sunday, April 1.

Gene is survived by his six children. His son, Jim Coon, and daughter-in-law, Amy Coon, work in MCC's Facilities Department and School of Community Engagement and Development, respectively.
