Telecommuting Pilot Update

With the support of Dr. Burt-Nanna, Cabinet, the CSEA, and the FA, MCC is moving forward with a Telecommuting Pilot.  Telecommuting is an alternate work arrangement that allows employees to conduct some of their work away from the official work site. The purpose of the Telecommuting Pilot is to create space for the College community to explore an alternative work arrangement while maintaining our collective focus on student success and meeting the College's operational needs. The pilot structure is based upon a model also being piloted at SUNY State-operated campuses. MCC employees will be able to submit an application for approval to work remotely up to 5 days per pay period.

Next steps for employees? Begin thinking about whether telecommuting up to 5 days per pay period is an option you wish to explore via the pilot. Is telecommuting feasible given your job title and duties? What days might you seek approval to work remotely? What tasks make sense for remote work? What tasks require an in-person presence or interaction?

Next steps for supervisors? Begin thinking about the challenges and opportunities that exist when supervising a department where some, but not all, employees may be working remotely. How will you ensure that those who are working in person on a particular day are not overly burdened by in-person demands while their colleagues are working remotely? How might you structure department meetings where some employees are attending in person and some are attending via Zoom? Does this impact how you structure communications and share information within the department?

More details will be shared within a week via the Telecommuting Pilot Guidelines document, including the timeframe for the pilot, how to apply, the approval process, expectations of telecommuting employees, etc. The electronic application and approval form is being finalized and tested right now.
