This Wednesday: A Talk With Dr. Christopher Thuot on The Classical Liberal Arts Education in 2020

The Democracy Commitment at MCC, MCC Faculty Senate, and Department of Anthropology, History, Political Science, and Sociology are happy to announce an upcoming talk with Christopher Thuot, Ph.D., Assistant Provost, SUNY Onondaga Community College. Dr. Thuot's talk will focus on the important role of the liberal arts education in a democratic society. More information on Dr. Thuot's talk is below.

"Classical Liberal Learning in 2020"

What is a liberal education? Why is a liberal education important in an age in which colleges prioritize career and technical fields? In what ways is a liberal education crucial to the maintenance of American political institutions?

Dr. Thuot will explore the nature and purpose of a liberal arts education. In particular, he will consider two dimensions of liberal learning. On the one hand, a key purpose of a liberal arts education is to develop skills and habits of mind that are appropriate to democratic citizens. At the same time, a liberal arts education of the noblest sort is not primarily concerned with skill development; it focuses instead on pursuing wisdom as an end in itself. Dr. Thuot's discussion is especially relevant given criticisms of American political discourse leading up to this year's presidential election.
