Volunteers Canvass City for Lead Hazards
by Peter Iglinski

ROCHESTER, NY (2006-09-21) A group of 30 volunteers walked through North Clinton Avenue neighborhoods in Rochester Thursday afternoon, passing out information on childhood lead poisoning.

The volunteers are with the AmeriCorps chapter at Monroe Community College and they were working with Rochester's Coalition to Prevent Lead Poisoning.

Spokesman David Pihl says people in the neighborhood have been reacting very positively to the canvas. He says the 14621 neighborhood has one of the city's highest rates of lead poisoning in young children.

Pihl hopes some parents will get their kids and their homes tested as a result of Thursday's canvas.

The city's new anti-lead requires that all residential structures built before 1978 be tested for the presence of lead-based paint, and that any lead hazards be removed or made safe.
