Quotes That Inspire

"It is never too late to be the first to wave." - Clifton L. Taulbert, author and entrepreneur

Director of Community Engagement & Single Stop Peggy Harvey-Lee discovered this quote within an article authored by Clifton Taulbert as featured in a GlobalMindED newsletter.

Mr. Taulbert's article, "The Little Girl Who Waved: Lessons From An Open Heart of Child Who Leads Us Now," focuses on the power of reaching out and not being afraid to wave first in order to connect with others and build community. Mr. Taulbert writes,

"Her life was short, but her joy was full. From our front porch, she experienced an America that Frederick Douglass had longed to see and Alexis de Tocqueville had traveled to experience. In her short life, she enjoyed community the way it should be: people respected, affirmed, and included each other. On our front porch, Democracy had an ally in a little girl who never thought twice about sharing her heart with others. She always waved first."

Through his writing, Mr. Taulbert asks if Americans could start a "FIRST WAVE" craze that introduces us to one another and sets the stage for racial healing in our country. Perhaps it's worth trying at MCC - virtually for now and on campus following our safe reopening.

Thank you, Peggy for sharing an inspiring article and quote. Perhaps Mr. Taulbert's daughter, Annie, was on to something that the world desperately needs today: a joyful wave.

Is there a quote that inspires you to be the best person you can be? If so, submit it along with a brief narrative about why the quote resonates for you to PresOffice@monroecc.edu. "Quotes That Inspire" are featured on Fridays in the MCC Daily Tribune.
