MCC finishes second in NATYCAA race

Anther fantastic sports year for the Monroe Community College athletic program culminated with another high finish in the race for the NATYCAA Cup.

The Tribunes were runner-up for the second straight year, finishing just nine points behind winner Iowa Central Community Central out of Fort Dodge, Iowa.

The NATYCAA Awards are given to recognize overall athletic program excellence by two-year colleges based on success in championship competition at the national level. The Tribunes, who are in the NJCAA Scholarship Division, won the Cup in 2006 and 2007. They were second in 2008.

Murph Shapiro, athletic director, represented MCC at an awards ceremony in Orlando, June 17-18.
In the scoring system used to determine the champion, a school may use its five highest finishes in national tournaments or polls in both men’s and women’s sports to compile a total score. Points are assigned to the place of finish beginning with 20 for a national championship, 19 for second and so on.

Monroe finished with a total of 149.5 points, second only to Iowa Central's 158.5.  MCC captured one national title during the year, as the golf team won its second championship in four years.

The women's lacrosse team placed second after reaching the NJCAA national championship game.  The women's swimming and diving and softball teams were third, while the ice hockey team reached the national semifinals.

MCC's men's swimming and diving squad was fourth and the men's basketball team was sixth.  The baseball and women's soccer teams also participated in national tournaments.

This is the sixth year of the NATYCAA Awards Program.  The National Alliance of Two-Year College Athletic Administrators (NATYCAA) is the national professional organization of all two-year college athletic administrators from throughout the United States.
