Rochester Officials Unveil "TRIP" Program, Aimed At Cracking Down On Truancy

Rochester City officials say they have a plan to try and reduce the number of students who are playing hooky from school.

Rochester City officials say they have a plan to try and reduce the number of students who are playing hooky from school. Mayor Bob Duffy says one of the major issues in the city is dealing with crime, and one of the major contributors to that is kids who get in trouble when they should be in school. Duffy and other city officials are launching what they call "TRIP", the truancy reduction and intervention program. In the first phase, which begins now, RPD officers will pick up truant students, return them to school and leave them in the care of school administrators. During comments Duffy made to MCC students, he told them that a city curfew is one thing he might also take a look at. He says, I'm considering, I'm not making any decisions yet, but I have a delegation going to Minneapolis next month looking at curfews. I'm going to consider one. But I had a curfew when I grew up and it wasn't put on by the police department, it was put on by my mother and father." Duffy says his new truancy program will also involve community organizations that can help find services for troubled youths.
