Virginia M. Dunn, Associate Professor Emerita

It is with sympathy that I inform you of the passing of Associate Professor Emerita Virginia M. Dunn on January 22, 2008. Virginia joined MCC’s Biology Department in 1964 and admirably served the college and its students for 23 years. She taught a variety of courses, including principles of biology, zoology, botany, life science/human environment and microbiology. A true MCC pioneer, Virginia worked to enhance the biology experience for students by including living plants and animals within the biology lab.

Referring to herself as MCC’s “unofficial social chairman,” Virginia felt it was important to “maintain and encourage the esprit de corps of our college.” She was actively involved in Biology Department and college-wide committees, including the United Way, MCC Association and the Philosophy and Goals committees. She served as the program chair for the Women’s Caucus during the 1980s.

In addition to teaching swimming for the American Red Cross, Virginia volunteered for the Association for the Learning Disabled and supported the Al Sigl Center’s efforts to support those with multiple sclerosis in our community.

Virginia will be remembered at a memorial service at noon, Friday, February 8th at Hedges Memorial Chapel, Inc. 21 Lincoln Avenue, Pittsford. She is predeceased by her husband, J. Stanley and son, Lee. She is survived by her daughters, Camilla (Dave) VanderLinden, Robin (Bill) MacLeod; grandchildren, Michael Christopher VanderLinden and Amanda MacLeod. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her memory may be made to St. John's Home Foundation, 150 Highland Avenue, Rochester, NY 14620.
