Safety Reminder

In wake of the series of campus shootings within the last several weeks, it is important to remind our campus community on how to respond in the unlikely event that you encounter a potentially violent situation on campus. The following guidelines are based on the best practices established by law enforcement experts.

As soon as you become aware of a potentially violent situation, if it is safe to do so, exit the building/area immediately, moving away from the immediate path of danger and take the following steps:

1.  Notify anyone you may encounter to exit the building/area immediately.

2.  Evacuate to a safe area away from the danger, and take protective cover. Remain until assistance arrives.

3.  Call Public Safety immediately at the Brighton campus or Applied Technologies Center (292-2911 or 911), Wilmorite Security at the Damon City campus (262-1414) or the 911 Call Center at the Public Safety Training Center (x9911) and provide the dispatcher with the following information:

    a.  Your name

    b.  Location of the incident (be as specific as possible)

    c.  Type of threat

    d.  Identification or description of suspect(s)

    e.  Number of persons who may be involved

    f.  Your exact location

    g.  Injuries to anyone, if known

4.  Individuals not immediately impacted by the situation are to take protective cover, staying away from windows and doors until notified otherwise.

5.  If you are directly involved in an incident and exiting the building is not possible, the following actions are recommended:

    a.  Go to the nearest room or office.

    b.  Close and lock the door (if the door cannot be locked, you can use a wedge or rolled up belt to place at the bottom of the door to prevent access).

    c.  Turn off the lights.

    d.  Seek protective cover.

    e.  Keep quiet and act as if no one is in the room.

    f.  Do not answer the door.

    g.  Notify Public Safety, Security or the Police as soon as it is safe to do so, providing the dispatcher with the same information as above.

6.  MCC has the ability to make announcements over the speakers on the classroom and office phones (VoIP network) on the Brighton and ATC campuses. In the event of any emergency, listen closely to these announcements and follow the instructions given. Emergency broadcast e-mails, web page notifications and digital signage network (plasma screens) further provide relevant information pertaining to campus emergencies at the Brighton and Damon City campuses.

7.  Wait for the police or Public Safety to assist you out of the building.

The MCC Public Safety Department, Brighton Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff's Department, Rochester Police Department and New York State Police are all trained and equipped to respond to an emergency of this nature. During the initial phase of the incident, responding law enforcement personnel along with MCC representatives will evaluate the situation to determine the best course of action for the safety of the MCC community. Once outside law enforcement responds to campus, they become responsible for all tactical operations.

8.  Several educational and awareness programs are presented throughout the year to provide additional training to the campus community on how to recognize and respond to threats of violence. Please take time to attend one of these informative sessions. In addition there is a PowerPoint presentation on our web site that is password protected where you may familiarize yourself with common terminology and standard operating procedures for emergency response.
