Answers to Multifactor Authentication Questions

On Monday March 7, MFA (Multifactor Authentication) will be required for logon to Microsoft 365 applications. Although most employees will not notice a change, due to limited use of 365, we have deliberately created a gradual roll out of MFA to give you plenty of time to enroll before critical systems you need to use start to require MFA. You only have to enroll in MFA one time. Once you enroll in MFA you are all set up to sign in with MFA on all the systems that will move to MFA.

Rollout Schedule

New systems moving to MFA will be announced in the Trib the prior week. The current plan is for the following systems to start requiring MFA at sign-on as follows:

  • March 7: Microsoft 365 applications (including Student Email)
  • March 14: WebFocus reports, Employees.monroecc.edu
  • March 21: Blackboard
  • March 28: Banner 9 Employee Self-Service (affects timesheets), Maxient, Civitas, Academic Works
  • The remaining systems will roll out in April, with the goal to have all 80 complete by April 30

*The current employee email system will not require MFA.

Student FAQ's - If students raise concerns to you, please share this information with them.

Do I have to have a smartphone and download the Microsoft Authenticator App to enroll in MFA?
No. Although downloading the Microsoft Authenticator App to your smartphone or tablet is strongly recommended as both the most secure and the most convenient method for the user, it is not required. When setting up Microsoft MFA at myaccount.microsoft.com on your computer, you can choose another option as the default MFA, including a text or phone call.

What if I don't have a smartphone in which to download the MFA app or a cell phone that can receive a text or call, and there is no telephone that can accept an incoming call in the location in which I need to sign into MCC systems?
Students who do not have a cellphone or smartphone nor even a telephone that can accept incoming calls in the location where they are signing into affected systems should email Ryan Messenger (rmessenger@monroecc.edu) for help.

How to enroll

To enroll in MFA, go to the App Store or Google Play to download the Microsoft Authenticator App on your phone.  Then on your computer go to myaccount.microsoft.com and sign in with your MCC student userid and password. Then click Security Info and then Click on + Add Method.  Select Authenticator App from the drop-down menu and follow the on-screen instructions. As noted above, you can choose another option as the default MFA, including a text or phone call that does not require downloading an app to your personal device.
