Spring Semester Testing Services News

Spring Semester Placement Testing:
The regular placement testing period for Spring ’17 ended last week, but both the Brighton Campus and Damon City Campus testing centers remain open. Coaches, advisors, and departments can send a student to test as long as they have a testing requirement in Banner.  Please use the new SOATEST codes instead of the old pink paper forms to provide testing requests by department (see the attached instructions).

Brighton Campus Hours (1/23 – 5/31):
Monday/Thursday: 3 – 7pm (Last test starting at 5pm)
Tuesday/Wednesday/Friday: 9am – 1pm (Last test starting at 11am)
Saturday (3/11, 4/8, and 5/13 only): 9am – 4pm (Last test starting at 2pm)

Damon City Campus Hours (1/23 – 5/31):
Tuesday/Thursday: 1 – 5pm (Last test starting at 3pm)
Wednesday: 9am – 1pm (Last test starting at 11am)

New Placement Testing Status:
When referring students to testing, please note that we have a new feature on our web pages to help students understand what to expect when they walk-in for placement testing.  Students will see one of the following status messages on our web pages: Light (little to no wait), Moderate (walk-ins may experience short wait), and Busy (appointments strongly encouraged— walk-ins expect a wait).

Locking Bags:
Testing Service purchased 15” x 15” locking bags for the Brighton Campus and Damon City Campus testing centers.  Small items prohibited in the testing center (e.g., cell phones and hats) will be secured in a bag that remains with the student at all times but is not accessible during testing.

Placement Testing Boot Camps:
Testing Services will begin offering free boot camps over the summer at the Brighton and new Downtown campuses to help students prepare for placement testing.  More information will be coming soon.

College Level Examination Program (CLEP) Exams:
The Brighton Campus testing center proctors CLEP exams for MCC students and the community.  CLEP offers credit by-examination for 33 exams in English, science, mathematics, foreign languages, history, social sciences, and business.  Students who take CLEP are more likely to earn a postsecondary degree and perform better in subsequent courses than those who take an introductory course.

Testing Services is also working with the Rochester City School District to bring large groups of bilingual students to MCC to take CLEP foreign language exams to encourage college enrollment.

PSI, Castle Worldwide, and Distance Learning Exams:
The Brighton Campus testing center continues to proctor a growing number of high-stakes professional and certification exams for PSI and Castle Worldwide (e.g., Federal Aviation Administration Air Traffic Skills Assessment, Board of Pharmacy Specialties, and Unites States Postal Service 473).  We also added four paper-pencil workstations to accommodate the increased requests for paper-pencil distance learning exams for students attending other institutions.  Proctoring fees associated with these exams generate revenue for the College.
