Fire & Safety Policy Update in Student Code of Conduct

Due to safety concerns about both fire and rider safety, hover boards or other electronically operated skateboard type devices shall not be allowed to be either charged, operated or stored on the Monroe Community College campus or any of its facilities, including the Residence Halls.

This announcement stems from concerns about the safety of the batteries used in these type of devices.  Numerous reports have surfaced about the batteries causing explosions and fires, creating a dangerous situation for our college community.  Hoverboards have been linked to fires in 12 states, and continue to be under investigation as the cause for multiple other injuries, accidents and explosions.  This campus-wide ban becomes effective immediately.

With the ban on hoverboards, Monroe Community College is joining a growing number of institutions who are also barring their use. Additionally, we have reviewed language to include the use/misuse of bicycles, skateboards, skates, scooters, etc on campus and have provided language to enforce safer use of non-motorized recreational equipment as well.

To address the use of unsafe equipment on our campus, the Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities has modified the Student Code of Conduct to offer detailed language regarding what the expectations are for students and safety on campus.

The Student Code of Conduct will be updated with the following language:

Monroe Community College Student Code of Conduct

Under part e. “anything determined to be a fire or safety hazard”, we are providing a list of items that fall in the category of fire or safety hazards that are prohibited on the Monroe Community College campus and facilities.  This list is by no means exhaustive, but provides a frame work for decision making.
