Enrollment Highlights for Fall 2002


Attached is the Credit Course Enrollment Highlights report for fall 2002. We have another record enrollment this fall although it is not evident in official census headcount numbers because of a change in dual credit reporting. The fall 2001 census included 1329 dual credit students whereas this semester, dual credit is not included in the census count but will be reported for FTE aid at the end of the semester. When this change in dual credit reporting is taken into account, our fall 2002 enrollment, at 16,052, is over 1200 students (+8%) more than the fall 2001 enrollment of 14,828 excluding dual credit. The comparable FTEs are 9% above last fall. In addition to the 5443.9 FTEs reported as of the census, we are projecting 410 FTEs in dual credit and other late starting courses by the end of the fall semester. To highlight the reporting change, numbers with dual credit included in fall 2001 are outlined. The rightmost column on the first page of the attached tables shows the real change from fall 2001 to fall 2002 when dual credit is taken out of the fall 2001 numbers. The comparisons below are made after adjusting for dual credit.

Admissions applications to the College were up 7% over last fall, yielding a 4% increase in registered new admits and readmits. Full-time enrollment is up 9% and part-time matriculated enrollment shows a 10% increase. When adjusted for dual credit, the change in part-time non-matriculated students is +4%.

The number of students taking courses over the SUNY Learning Network (SLN) continues to increase. MCC is offering 84 different SLN courses (112 sections) this semester with enrollment of 1716 students and 233 FTEs, an increase of 291 students and 52 FTEs over last fall.

All age groups showed increases ranging from 6% for age at least 30, to 10% for age 20-24..

Minority enrollment increased more than non-minority bringing the overall minority percentage in the student population to over 24%. The campus minority proportions are Brighton - 22%, DCC - 51%, and PSTF - 6%.

Enrollment in most programs has increased, the exceptions being science and technical education programs. The drop in the Transitional Studies Tech. program and increase in extended option programs is due, at least in part, to the reinstatement of the extended option in computer programs. Enrollment in 2+2 programs fell for the third year in a row, partly because of program changes for students who no longer meet the 2+2 requirements.

Enrollment at DCC increased more than Brighton (11% in FTEs vs. +8%) but fewer students are taking courses concurrently on both campuses. As of the census date, Public Safety Training had 36% more FTEs than last year but this could change since a high proportion of their courses do not conform to the fifteen-week semester and will be reported at the end of the term.


DCC students are still older than Brighton students but younger than PSTF students. Thirty-eight percent of DCC's population is at least 30 while 25% of Brighton students and 46% of PSTF students are in that age group.
