MCC Honors Richard M. Guon

The Monroe Community College Child Care Center has been renamed the Richard M. Guon Child Care Center to honor the late entrepreneur, humanitarian and chair of the Monroe Community College Board of Trustees.

Until his death in April at age 62, Guon was president of Guon Corporation, which owns and operates several McDonald’s restaurants in Rochester.

His relationship with MCC spanned nearly a quarter-century. Since 1984, he and the Guon Corporation provided significant financial support to the college and its students. Guon served as a board trustee for 11 years, the last four years as chair and vice chair.

As a member of the Monroe Community College Foundation Board of Directors and the Foundation Council for 21 years, he also dedicated his leadership and philanthropy to better the lives of MCC students. He successfully led the MCC Foundation’s first capital campaign, which raised $1 million from 1990-92 to build the MCC Child Care Center. His efforts demonstrated his commitment to providing a safe and nurturing environment for children to stay while their parents attended classes at MCC.

The child care center opened in 1991 and has since provided quality care to nearly 2,000 children and 1,400 families. It offers a range of programs serving infants, toddlers and preschoolers. During the summer, programs are available for school-age youngsters.

“It’s only befitting to honor the memory and leadership of a dear friend and tremendous MCC supporter by naming the center for Richard,” said Kenneth G. Goode, who assumed the role of board chair in April. “MCC had a special place in his heart, and he found joy in helping cultivate young minds and supporting the success of its students. He was often leading the way in establishing giving standards for others to emulate.”

A renaming ceremony will take place in the spring.
