READ: Hope in Action Collaboration with School #15

MCC’s Athletic Department and Libraries have been honored to participate again this year in the READ: Hope in Action Giant Read initiative. On February 10, approximately 25 MCC student athletes, as well as a few coaches and librarians, traveled en mass to The Children’s School of Rochester to read Little Bear and the Marco Polo by Else Holmelund Minarik (author) and Dorothy Doubleday (illustrator) to a group of 45 enthusiastic first graders. The first graders were then given their own copies of the book to keep.

This is MCC’s second year of involvement in this project. Over the 2010-2011 academic year, the MCC Libraries and Athletic Department volunteered to participate in a local grant opportunity involving the Rochester City School District. RIT librarians and RIT student athlete Kevin Rattigan were awarded a grant to host the READ: Hope in Action project, a collaborative effort to partner local colleges and Rochester City schools in order to promote reading. MCC was partnered with The Children’s School of Rochester (#15).

We wish to commend Athletic Director Skip Bailey, his staff of coaches, and the incredible student athletes who volunteered to make this event such a success! We also wish to thank the MCC Foundation for its support this year. Although the RIT grant funds were not available for a second year, we were able to purchase the books given to the first graders at The Children’s School of Rochester due to the generosity of the Foundation.
