Engineering Leadership Council Wins 1st Place at National Competition

MCC Engineering Leadership Council members were victorious at the 2005 Two-Year College Division Engineering Design National Competition at the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) conference held on June 13, in Portland, Oregon.

In addition to winning first place, MCC teams also captured fourth and sixth places. The competition required teams to design and build an autonomous robot capable of delivering ping pong balls to each of four corner pockets located on an 8’ X 8’ plywood track. Each team had to create a written report, make an oral presentation, and then perform four trials on the track.

According to John Wadach, Engineering Science and Physics, “This was an extremely successful and educational endeavor for our students. Their teamwork was phenomenal and they all devoted hundreds of hours designing, building, and testing their robots.…Watching them work has been immensely motivating for me.”

Wadach also credits members of the Student Services Division, Precision Tooling and Machining program and the MCC Bookstore for their support.

“Although it is nice to savor this victory, my students and I are already talking about what we need to do to successfully defend our title next June at the 2006 ASEE competition in Chicago,” said Wadach.”

The Monroe County Legislature will recognize members of the Engineering Leadership Council at its July 12 meeting.
