Training

Please take some time to explore this document on how to get started in Brightspace from login to import to cleanup: Faculty Brightspace Checklist. We will add more to this document as we go along, but it will give you some basics of getting started.

You will also have access to SUNY's asynchronous training when you log in so you can get familiar with the basics of Brightspace. You can find the training listed in My Courses and labeled as "SUNY DLE Brightspace Fundamentals Asynchronous Modules". We recommend going through this if you haven't attended any live Brightspace training at your own pace. If you prefer a live training format, as a reminder, you can sign up for the SUNY training: Register for Brightspace Training.

Shells

We have created practice course shells (5 of them) for you to work in and we recommend working in these courses first before moving your course content into your live shells, especially if you are importing content from Blackboard. If you intend to merge courses in the future, we also recommend that you work in the practice shells first because our process will be very different than in Blackboard. If you don't have an active assignment, you can still use these practice shells to get a course ready. Practice shells do not have any students enrolled. If you intend to include third-party content, we recommend getting the course ready in a practice shell and then linking in the live course.

We have created (some) Fall 22 course shells in Brightpspace. More will be running soon. As you are assigned to courses for fall, new shells will be generated for you automatically. Be on the lookout. Please note that courses are labeled differently than in Blackboard. The shells will follow this format: 22FA Course Title CRN. Know your CRNs so you don't accidentally add content to the wrong place once you are ready.

Some of you may notice that you have courses that were automatically merged (if they were crosslisted) and this appears differently than in Blackboard and may appear that you are missing courses. It will not tell you that another course is merged into the existing shell, but your classlist will show student enrollments for both sections. Some courses may be combined into the lowest number CRN shell. Please reach out if you have questions about this virtualcampus@monroecc.edu. We will try to provide some more details as we learn more.

You may be wondering why you have students in future fall shells before preview day. Yes, this is different than in Blackboard. In Brightspace, students are enrolled as soon as the shell is created, however, they cannot see any of your content until 7 days prior to your course start date. They do see a grayed out version of the course until it opens. There will be differences between the two systems and we will keep you updated on what you need to know.

Brightspace Access for Faculty and Access to Course Shells

We were able to provide faculty access to Brightspace in our MCC instance yesterday afternoon! Many of you have already accessed the system. Faculty can access practice course shells intended for course development and live fall course shells. Thank you to some of our colleagues that alerted us to an issue with our fall course shells. We did find an error and some fall shells did not run properly yesterday due to special characters (*) in course names in Banner. This may take some time to resolve. If you don't see your shells yet, look for them to come soon. A special thank you to Jamie Hoover for facilitating the process of account and shell creation. As you know, we were hoping for full faculty access much sooner (mid-April) and we had to work through many SUNY delays, but we are very happy to finally give you access. We thank you for your patience in this process.
