Classes Get Under Way for YouthBuild

Thirteen high school dropouts started classes this week at MCC that will launch them into a career in the high-demand construction industry.

A grant last October created a new YouthBuild program, which is a collaborative effort among the Urban League of Rochester, U.S. Department of Labor, Rochester City School District, Flower City Habitat for Humanity and MCC. The program prepares disadvantaged high school dropouts from the ages of 18 to 24 for careers in construction. Participants receive stipends while they complete MCC’s 200-hour Construction Essentials training course, receive GED training, and gain hands-on experience building homes.

The Urban League has operated the YouthBuild program for the past 12 years; this is the first multiple partnership of its kind. “The YouthBuild program has proven to be an effective model for helping high school dropouts get on the path to economic self-sufficiency,” says Urban League of Rochester President and CEO William Clark.
