Congratulations to the MCC Instructional Development Team - FACT2 Excellence Award Winners!

Please join me in congratulating the MCC Instructional Development Team: Tom Capuano, Jeremy Case, Andrea Gilbert, Martha Kendall, Andrea Kingston, Anjali Parasnis-Samar, and Alice Wilson selected as recipients of the FACT2 Excellence in Instructional Support Award.

The FACT2 Excellence in Instructional Support Award recognizes excellence by full or part-time instructional support persons involved in supporting innovative uses of educational technologies to meaningfully improve teaching and learning by working individually or in collaboration with teaching faculty in the strategic application of curriculum within SUNY. The recipients of this award have demonstrated excellence through instructional support practice, and the ability to recognize pedagogical opportunities and to devise strategies for infusing the curriculum with innovative use of technology that aligns with learning outcomes.

These criteria perfectly define the goals and describe the outcomes of MCC's Team Based Course Development process. MCC has created a consistent and scalable model that supports the adoption of any new innovation or technology and builds positive partnerships with the faculty. The MCC online course development process was completely redesigned to incorporate the use of the Open SUNY Course Quality Review Rubric (OSCQR) into the development and redesign of all online courses.

In the past two years the MCC Instructional Development Team has:

  • Worked with faculty on 34 new online courses, 35 online course redesigns and 29 OER courses.
  • Supported 24 Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) courses.
  • Presented a webinar offered through the SUNY Center for Professional Development which highlighted the current process titled "Using the OSCQR Rubric for Online Course Development". Participants were also provided with resources to assist them in adopting this model.
  • Shared the MCC team based approach at the 2016 SUNY CIT Conference in a session titled "Hello From the Other Side" Our Journey Through the Open SUNY+ OSCQR Process" and at the 2017 SUNY CIT Conference in a session titled "Building Open: A Team-Based Approach to Creating an OER Degree Pathway".

MCC's Team Based Model based on the Open SUNY Course Quality Review Rubric (OSCQR) brings together a support team that is knowledgeable in instructional design, technology, research, and innovation. The team includes the Faculty Member teaching the course, an Instructional Designer, a Librarian, and a Multi-media Specialist. At MCC we call this team the Instructional Design Team.

The use of the OSCQR rubric ensures that the team keeps the student experience integral to the process while also including the needs of faculty members. The OSCQR process views courses from three different perspectives:

  • The Faculty Member's perspective (a review by the course author).
  • The Instructional Designer's perspective.
  • The External Reviewer's perspective (someone unfamiliar with the course)

These perspectives combine to provide rich feedback on the design of the online course and inform a plan to refresh design elements, such as content presentation, facilitation of collaboration, and providing feedback and assessment.

The model was initiated as a framework for online course design and has been expanded to support faculty with the adoption of Open Educational Resources (OERs) and any emerging technology. The Library team is leading OER adoption at MCC. The team-based approach is also used to support the development of COIL courses, led by MCC's Office of Global Education and International Services with support from Instructional Designers, Librarians, and Multimedia Specialists.

Congratulations Team!
