MCC golfers win national title

The Monroe Community College golf team has relied on a balanced attack all season long.  Things were no different at last week's NJCAA Division III national championships.

All five MCC golfers placed in the top 19 out of 104 participants as the Tribunes cruised to the college's first golf national title at the Chautauqua Institution Golf Club. It was the fourth national championship won by the college this school year, joining women's soccer, women's basketball, and softball.

Monroe obliterated the tournament record for lowest team score with a four-day total of 1,168, which was 42 strokes better than the previous record held by Columbus State (2003) and central Lakes College (2005).  MCC's 2006 score was 26 strokes better than runner-up Louisburg College (North Carolina).  The Tribunes were led by sophomore Mike Colosi (Rush-Henrietta), who finished as the tournament's top individual golfer with a four-under total of 284.

Colosi had rounds of 72-71-69-72 to become MCC's fourth individual champion. He had been the top-ranked golfer in Division III for much of the year.  His 284 total also set the individual tournament record by four strokes.

Brett Semple (Greece Olympia) placed sixth for the Tribunes with an overall score of 294 (78-75-71-70) and Justin Pfalzer (Pembroke) was 11th with a 299 (70-78-75-76). Bobby McCartney (Webster Schroeder) carded a 300 (75-73-73-79) that was good for 12th place and John Altobello (Aquinas) finished 19th with a 304 (75-81-74-74).

Colosi, Semple, Pfalzer, and McCartney each earned All-American honors.

MCC came close to winning the title last year, falling by one stroke to champion Central Lakes College.  This year, however, the outcome was rarely in doubt.

The Tribunes finished day one with a five-stroke lead over Central Lakes.  The lead ballooned to 11 strokes over second-place Louisburg at the midway point.

MCC followed by registering the second-lowest team round in tournament history with a one-under 287, building the overall lead to 24 strokes. The third round was sparked by Colosi's three-under 69.  MCC then wrapped up the title with a final day 292.
