President's Wednesday Message

As I write this message, I’m looking at the banks of snow growing and growing across the campus and think that we might be living in igloos by the time we hold the MCC Holiday Reception next Wednesday. But, regardless of the weather outside, the spirit of the reception will fill the college with warmth as we gather with friends over good food, great company, glowing memories, and many hopeful wishes for the future.

It may sound corny, but each day at MCC really provides me with a treasured gift. Monday night, I stood in the North Atrium overlooking our amazing students as they gave life to Handel’s Messiah. Last week, our Men of Excellence treated SUNY’s Chancellor to their irrepressible energy and their joy at being a part of MCC. Last month, I ate pizza and wings with our Automotive students in the board room, where—probably for the first time ever in that room or even in this building—a presentation had live drum accompaniment. Truly, I could look at my calendar, 365 out of 365, and share a story that reveals another shining star moment at MCC. And, of course, the ribbon wrapped around each of these remarkable gifts is the dedication, innovation, passion, and sheer talent of our faculty and staff.

Last year, in recognition of the many gifts we’ve received from MCC, Ned and I began the Snowflake Scholarship (an all too appropriate appellation, it seems!). The name comes from an anonymous quote: "Snowflakes are one of nature's most fragile things, but just look what they can do when they stick together." The scholarship recognizes that all of us at MCC, working together, promote student success. My family is contributing $1 for each of MCC's 1,591 employees, and we encourage each employee to contribute at least $1 of his or her own. Each dollar donated will "stick" to ours and build an opportunity for students to receive the greatest gift of all: a stellar education.  Last year, thanks to your generosity, the MCC Foundation awarded two Snowflake Scholarships.

With this scholarship, we celebrate the very best of the season: the spirit of community that brings us together. In this spirit, Ned, Harper, Penn and I wish you the very best of the season and hope to see you next week as we celebrate merrily!

Share one of your "shining star" moments at MCC on the President's Wednesday Message blog.
