Applied Learning Workshop at MCC

Have you found yourself grappling with questions of equity, wondering what you can do to increase student engagement and/or success in any of your own classes? If so, please consider joining MCC's HIP Committee, the TCC, and MCC's Applied Learning Workgoup remotely on Monday, May 24, from 9:30 AM to 3 PM, for a special Applied Learning Workshop.

Applied Learning refers to an educational approach through which students learn by engaging in direct application of skills, theories, and models, often in conjunction with specific High-Impact Practices. According to data collected by the AACU, students who take one or more class that employs a High-Impact Practice are significantly more likely to report levels of engagement in deep learning and perceived gains in relation to course material, and this likeliness increases dramatically if these students are underserved in other ways.

Excited by the potential for addressing equity and engagement at MCC, we are working with Buffalo State to centralize and support Applied Learning and High-Impact Practices on our campus. This particular Workshop will provide participants with an understanding of Applied Learning, its relationship with High-Impact Practices, its benefits, and how to use its techniques in one of your own classes. Many ideas and resources will be shared through discussion, but the main goal of the Workshop will be for you to emerge with a tangible plan for adapting one or more of your Fall 2021 or Spring 2022 courses by incorporating Applied Learning and/or High-Impact Practices.

If you are interested in this Workshop, please register before the Friday, May 14 deadline. Here is the link: https://monroecommunity.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZYldOiqpjspGNR_prPXNIiItY_xqOjdfAAX. Please note that you will be asked while registering which, if any, HIPs you currently practice or have practiced in any of your classes. Brief definitions are below, in case that’s useful. If you have any questions, please contact Jim Cronmiller at jcronmiller@monroecc.edu or Maria Brandt at mbrandt@monroecc.edu.

We look forward to working together on this important project.
