Avalone Serves as Trainer for SUNY Construction Fund

The SUNY Construction Fund contracted with the Society for College and University Planners (SCUP) to bring Valarie Avalone, director of planning, to Albany in late May to offer Planning Institute 2: Developing and Implementing a Strategic Plan.

For planners, it is not enough to just write goals and outcomes. They must learn to care for the plan for it to produce outcomes. PI 2 is about the process of building the plan, looking at the alignment between the strategic plan, institution-wide plans and unit plans, and how to coordinate the implementation of the plan.

Avalone customized the two-day workshop with examples relevant to SUNY and focused on a number of topics related to developing and implementing a strategic plan and the establishment of an integrated planning process. Part of the PI experience is to work together in teams to view and solve problems from diverse lenses which is a key tenet of integrated planning. The workshop followed a process that was participatory, robust and sustainable. Participants were provided a number of tools, techniques, and skills they could use to leverage their institution's complex operating environment for change.

This is the third workshop Avalone has facilitated for SUNY.
