NACUA Virtual Seminar: Toxic Employees in the Workplace: Managing Your “Frien-emies”
Thursday, September 23, 2010
Noon to 2 pm

Board Room, within the President's Office Suite, 1-321)

Program Description:
The effective management of difficult or troublesome employees, as well as the potential for legal risk associated with this conduct, is one of the greatest challenges college or university counsel can face. Further, "toxic" conduct, such as the abuse of policies and procedures, or belligerent and/or dangerous behavior toward colleagues and students, can become more complicated as a result of the types of responses provided by campus supervisors. This seminar will focus on some of the most common "toxic" conduct occurring on campuses today. Through use of common scenarios, which involve both faculty and staff, the seminar will offer effective tools for the successful management of "toxic" conduct, both legally and strategically.

Join experts for a lively discussion of the complex array of personnel issues and toxic conduct challenges faced on campuses today, best practices to manage this conduct, and effective ways to work with Human Resources and campus leaders to produce a more productive work environment.

This program covers issues that include:
- Productive use of fitness for duty exams, EAP referrals, "Last Chance" agreements, administrative leaves and progressive discipline

- Documents or statutes/regulations which may limit the use of certain forms of discipline or removal of troublesome employees

- Hiring, evaluation and discipline challenges for academic and non-academic supervisors

- Special concerns associated with the management of toxic faculty

- Dispute resolution options available to prevent, manage or resolve toxic or troublesome conduct
