9/11 Commemoration at MCC

A Rochester native and Monroe Community College student who medically treated his attempted assassin while serving in Iraq will be honored during an 8 a.m. commemoration on Sunday, Sept. 11, at MCC’s Remembrance Walk on the Brighton Campus.

Pfc. Stephen Tschiderer of Mendon, who has served in Iraq since October 2004 with the National Guard’s 101st Calvary, was on patrol in Baghdad when Iraqi insurgents opened fire on and shot Tschiderer. A bullet-proof vest saved his life. He and other members of his unit chased the insurgents and eventually caught the sniper, who had suffered a broken leg and three gunshot wounds to his lower body. Tschiderer, an emergency medical technician, then treated the man’s injuries.

MCC students who are organizing the commemoration will honor Tschiderer with a brick to be placed along the Remembrance Walk. The commemoration also will pay tribute to all military personnel who are students, faculty and staff of MCC and are currently serving or have served in Iraq since the beginning of the war.

Following a moment of silence at 8:45 a.m., when the first plane struck the World Trade Towers in New York City, students will usher guests to the base of the monument for a floral tribute to honor everyone who died during the 2001 terrorist attacks in New York City, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C.

The event, organized by the Student Government Association (SGA) and Campus Activities Board, also will include remarks by MCC President R. Thomas Flynn, and SGA President Owen Arthur, along with a performance of “God Bless America” by Troy Pinkins, SGA vice president.

Faculty, staff, students and the community are all welcome to attend the commemoration, which will take place at the monument located behind the Samuel J. Stabins Physical Education Complex on MCC’s Brighton Campus. Parking is available in Lot G.
