MCC Team - MS Walk 2006

Annual MS Walk For a Cure

The Outdoor Activities Club (OAU) and the MCC Peer Mentors are teaming up to try and raise an MCC Student Clubs record $7,500 for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s annual MS Walk taking place on Sunday, May 7th, 2006.

What is MS?

Multiple Sclerosis is thought to be an autoimmune disease that affects the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS consists of the brain, spinal cord, and the optic nerves. Surrounding and protecting the nerve fibers of the CNS is a fatty tissue called myelin, which helps nerve fibers conduct electrical impulses.  In MS, myelin is lost in multiple areas, leaving scar tissue called sclerosis. These damaged areas are also known as plaques or lesions. Sometimes the nerve fiber itself is damaged or broken.  Myelin not only protects nerve fibers, but makes their job possible. When myelin or the nerve fiber is destroyed or damaged, the ability of the nerves to conduct electrical impulses to and from the brain is disrupted, and this produces the various symptoms of MS.  More information can be found on the "https://www.nationalmssociety.org/about%20ms.asp"National MS Society Web Site.

 Ways to Show Support

There are several ways you can help our teams achieve this goal including joining our team to walk, pledging money to a person walking and/or purchasing a wristband to support the MS Society.  Please take a moment to look at our "https://www.nationalmssociety.org/NYR/personal/my_team.asp?pa=47350847&pd=NYR0EWLK20060507ROC"team website where you can view our current team roster, join the walking team or sponsor a team member.  We will have several brochures and posters around the campus if you are looking for more information or contact one of the team captains listed below.
