February is American Heart Month: Spread the Word and Make a Difference!

Heart disease is the leading cause of death for men and women in the United States. Every year, one in four deaths are caused by heart disease.

The good news? Heart disease can often be prevented when people make healthy choices and manage their health conditions. The MCC Wellness Council, health professionals, and families can work together to create opportunities to help each other make healthier choices.

To lower your risk of heart disease, The American Heart Association recommends the following: watch your weight, quit smoking and stay away from secondhand smoke, control your cholesterol and blood pressure (know your numbers), if you drink alcohol – drink only in moderation, get active and eat healthy.

If you are interested in learning more about any of the above initiatives, there are support systems and tools available to you.  Please check the Employee tab in myMCC for the Fit & Friendly channel!  There you will find the Tip of the Week and a link to the MCC Workplace Wellness Resource page listing events and activities, educational resources, tips on: healthy living, fitness and weight management, stress relief, health concerns, smoking cessation, and preventative health.

MCC’s gold recognition as a Fit-Friendly worksite provides employees additional resources on increasing activity and healthy eating options.   Register for the American Heart Association’s online activity tracker today at:
https://www.startwalkingnow.org/registration.jsp .  Use this tracker to log your times or distance traveled, plot and save your walking routes, and enter daily meals and snacks.

Upcoming wellness events in March include: Cancer Screening information table: March 3 and MVP information table for students: March: 2, 6, 9, 10, 13, 16, 23, 24 and 27, sponsored by health services.
