You Can't Read That!: Banned Books Under Discussion

The LeRoy V. Good Library (Brighton Campus) is extremely pleased to announce that it will be hosting an event in honor of Banned Books Week (September 22-28, 2013). On Wednesday, September 25, 12:00 noon to 12:50 pm, MCC Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Michael McDonough and Professor Charlie Clarke will be speaking on “You Can’t Read That!: Banned Books Under Discussion.” The event will be located on the 4th floor of the library, outside of room 2-452.

Michael J. McDonough was appointed the Provost and Vice President of Academic Services at Monroe Community College in April 2011. He holds a BA (Hons) in Film and Drama and a Post Graduate Certificate in Education from Reading University in England, an MA in English from Oklahoma State University, a PhD in English from The Pennsylvania State University, and a Certificate in Educational Management from Harvard University. Prior to joining MCC, he held the Fred H. Gertz Endowed Chair in English at Alfred University, teaching a wide variety of courses in American Literature, Drama, and Film. He has taught a wide variety of students in an equally eclectic range of settings: a maximum security prison, an inner city high school, and the British Museum. In 2012, he was elected Chair of the Academic Advisory Committee of The College Board. He lives in West Henrietta, NY, with his wife and two boys and a privileged English Setter. He continues to hold out against all hope that England will one day win the World Cup again and that Led Zeppelin will play one final reunion concert.

Charles R. Clarke has been a Professor of Psychology at Monroe Community College for over 40 years. During that period he has also been a part-time faculty member in the Departments of Health Science, Communications, and Social Work at the College at Brockport, the Social Sciences Department at Genesee Community College, the Psychology Department at Saint John Fisher College, and at the University of Rochester. He presently teaches and writes in the areas of human sexuality, the social psychology of the Holocaust and genocide, and the psychology of religion. He was Chair of the Department of Psychology at MCC for 18 years. He also currently serves as the Director of MCC’s Holocaust, Genocide, and Human Rights Project, which is an endowed chair. For the past 25 years he has served in various capacities for MCC’s Faculty Association, including as executive officer, contract administrator, and chief negotiator, representing over 1,000 faculty.
