Coronavirus: Protect yourself and each other

While the immediate risk of the 2019 novel coronavirus* to New Yorkers remains low, MCC's college-wide task force continues to monitor the situation and stay in close contact with federal, state/SUNY and county officials in order to mitigate the spread of this and all respiratory illnesses within the campus community.

Protecting yourself and others from getting and spreading the coronavirus will help reduce the potential number of cases.

Thank you for your efforts to stay healthy and take action to slow the spread. MCC's Facilities team is doing its part by increasing surface cleaning efforts in high-traffic areas on campus, providing additional hand-sanitizing stations, and distributing canisters with disinfectant wipes for the campus community to use to ensure equipment, tables, computer keyboards and other surfaces are wiped clean prior to using.

As summarized in yesterday's MCC Daily Tribune article, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and New York State Department of Health (NYSDOH) recommend using Nonpharmaceutical Interventions (NPIs)--actions people and communities can take to help slow the spread of illnesses, especially before vaccines are available. Personal NPIs include:

  1. Respiratory etiquette
    1. Cover coughs and sneezes; use a shirt sleeve if tissue not available.
    2. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  2. Hand hygiene: Wash your hands regularly and thoroughly with soap and water or alcohol-based hand sanitizers.
  3. Voluntary home quarantine: Stay home if you have been exposed to a family or household member who is sick.

For your convenience, attached is a poster from the CDC with tips on how you can stop the spread of germs and illnesses like coronavirus.

* According to the World Health Organization, the illness is referred to as COVID-19; the virus is now called SARS-CoV-2.
