Geography Awareness Week at MCC

The Chemistry/Geosciences Department and the New York Geographic Alliance are celebrating Geography Awareness Week this year with several activities. The theme of this national event (sponsored by the National Geographic Society) is “Fresh Water.” This is a very important resource for Planet Earth. We in New York have the geographical advantage of abundant water resources, but we have not always taken care of these resources.

The department will have a quiz on Fresh Water available on-line. The link of this quiz is
https://www.monroecc.edu/go/quiz.  Then, on Tuesday November 16, we will a table in the Campus Center Atrium outside the Book Store where students and staff can learn more about Geography Awareness Week. Come by and see our Water Pyramid that shows how much water the average American consumes/uses in one day (100 gallons!), compared to the five gallons that most people in poorer nations have at their disposal. The Colorado River Basin is an area in crisis. It is supposed to flow into the Gulf of California, but it usually doesn’t make it there. A demonstration by Prof. Dan Robertson will show you why this ecological disaster happens.

There will be free material about Fresh Water at the table. If you help us place a World Heritage Site on a World Map, you will receive a free blow-up globe or a flash drive! We also invite members of the MCC community to join the New York Geographic Alliance. It’s free, and we put you in touch with other people in our state that believe that geographic literacy is important in the 21st century.
