Pre-Collegiate Service Scholars Group to Foster Service Learning, Community Involvement

I am excited to announce the Pre-Collegiate Service Scholars group, a joint venture of DCC’s AmeriCorps office and three pre-collegiate programs: the Liberty Partnerships Program (LPP), the Science and Technology Entry Program (STEP), and Upward Bound!

Pre-Collegiate Service Scholars was created to provide opportunities for youth to gain leadership experience and to learn about a variety of local service organizations.  The intent is to build community among the youth as they participate in cooperative service learning experiences.  The experience and skills they gain through this work can be leveraged in future college, scholarship, and career opportunities.  To this end, Pre-Collegiate Service Scholars will work toward goals that include the President’s Volunteer Service Award and the Congressional Award for Service.  Additionally, we hope the group will increase good will toward inner city youth by providing examples of young people giving back to the Rochester community.

Fourteen members of the Pre-Collegiate Service Scholars volunteered at Foodlink on January 16th.  Members will meet on February 3rd to reflect on the experience and the role of service in their lives.  On February 17th, the group will work at Rochester Unused Medical Supplies (RUMS, part of Intervol).

A big thank you to the organizing committee that has made this all possible:
