School #15 Students Visit MCC

The MCC Libraries have been honored to participate over the 2010-2011 academic year in a local grant opportunity involving the Rochester City School District. RIT librarians and RIT student athlete Kevin Rattigan were awarded a grant to host the READ: Hope in Action project, a collaborative effort to partner local colleges and Rochester City schools in order to promote reading. MCC was partnered with The Children’s School of Rochester (#15).

The second part of the grant project was carried out recently on April 8. Forty-five sixth graders from The Children’s School of Rochester arrived at MCC for a day of college activities. The children were treated to an exhibition by John Wadach and his engineering students and physical fitness testing by Doug Henneberg. After a brief campus tour and lunch, the children convened in the PAC for sports-related activities led by our own MCC student athletes. The children had a fabulous time on campus!

Part one of the grant project occurred last fall, on November 5, when approximately 50 MCC student athletes, as well as a few coaches and librarians, traveled en mass to The Children’s School of Rochester for the Giant Read, the first segment of the READ: Hope in Action project. MCC students read Dr. Seuss’ The Foot Book to a group of 45 enthusiastic first graders. The first graders were then given their own copies of the book to keep.

We wish to commend Athletic Director Skip Bailey, his staff of coaches, and the incredible student athletes who volunteered to make this event such a success!

The MCC READ: Hope in Action project team includes: Skip Bailey, Lori Annesi and Ted Ciambor.
