Understanding how coursework not applicable to current degree program can impact financial aid eligibility

To faculty and staff who advise students: Both Federal and State regulations stipulate that students cannot be awarded financial aid for course work that is not applicable to the student’s current degree program.  For example, if a student is enrolled in a total of 12 credit hours for a semester and 6 of those credit hours are not applicable to the student’s degree program, the student will only be eligible to receive financial aid for the course that are applicable to the students degree program.

The exception to this is remedial course work (up to 30 semester hours for Federal Aid Programs) can be used to determine the student’s enrollment status

Specifically, when advising students who were previously enrolled at MCC, there are several issues to be aware of that could impact the students eligibility to receive financial aid.   We would like advisors to become familiar with how a student’s poor and/or lengthy academic history could adversely affect their eligibility to receive financial aid for future terms of enrollment and in cases where the students appear to have possible eligibility issues, to refer them to the Financial Aid Office.
