Reactions from Dr. Douglas, Chancellor Malatras on Vaccinations

Spectrum News-Rochester spoke with Interim President Douglas and Chancellor Malatras in two separate interviews about the state's opening vaccination eligibility to students ages 16 and older and what this means for MCC and SUNY.

"The science-driven vaccine is true light at the end of the tunnel," Dr. Douglas said.

She did not say whether vaccination will be available on campus and what the fall semester will look like as discussions are still taking place among faculty, staff and administrators. MCC Association and the Athletic Department have begun informing student-residents and student-athletes about their eligibilty for vaccination.

Dr. Douglas emphasized that keeping the MCC campus community healthy and safe remains the foremost priority and weekly pooled testing has prevented COVID outbreaks at the college.

“Most of our students want to be vaccinated because they want to go back to normal,” Chancellor Malatras said. “Our faculty wants to go back to normal, our staff wants to go back to normal. So this is a big day for us to have this open eligibility for sure.”

The Spectrum News' report "SUNY Colleges Discuss Plans for Student COVID-19 Vaccinations" aired April 7 and 8.
