"Kindred" Author Octavia Butler Comes to MCC Friday, March 7


On Friday, March 7 at 10 a.m., in MCC's Brighton Campus Theatre, author Octavia Butler will lead a discussion of the book she wrote - and the book all of Rochester is reading - "Kindred."

The first African-American woman to gain critical acclaim as a major science fiction writer, Butler earned an associate's degree at Pasadena City College. She attended California State University, the University of California at Los Angeles, the Open Door Program of the Screen Writers' Guild and the Clarion SF Writers' Workshop. In 1995, she was awarded a $295,000 MacArthur Foundation fellowship for her unique synthesis of science fiction, mysticism, mythology and African-American spiritualism.

Butler's presentation, free and open to the public, will be held in MCC's Brighton Campus Theatre located in Bldg. 4, 1000 East Henrietta Road.
