"It truly is hard to be a parent while going to college especially working on top of it all. I hope this... helps MCC determine what really can help parents out when trying to accomplish so many things at one time. We need it." - MCC Single Mom Learner

More than 18% of MCC's student body are "Student-Parents," college students with dependent children. More than half of those Student-Parents are Single Mom Learners. MCC's "SMLs" are disproportionately first generation college students, not college ready at entry, and living below the poverty line. Nonetheless, our SMLs have an extraordinary drive and a unique incentive to earn a college degree: to elevate their lives and the lives of their children. In spring 2019, MCC was one of only four community colleges in the nation to receive the Single Moms Success Design Challenge (SMSDC) grant. "A core team of MCC faculty and staff has spent the past year and a half gathering information from and about our SMLs." Using a human-centered design approach, they are designing supports to help increase SMLs' rates of graduation and/or transfer to a four-year college.

Using case-study scenarios, small groups will create strategies for having difficult and transparent conversations with students. This includes parallel planning, summer course candidacy, mapping semester plans, and reviewing admission program requirements. Each student is unique based on academic history/preparedness, outside commitments, and motivation. Help students plan to meet their non-cognitive needs as they prepare for admission into competitive health programs. Participants will gain confidence in their ability to support their advisees in the process of defining, evaluating, and modifying their goals.
