Math faculty K. Wells and A. Leopard present on Cooperative Learning at National Conference

Mathematics Department faculty members Karen Wells and Annette Leopard recently presented a workshop titled, “Practicing What We Preach - Effective Cooperative Learning Practices” to a national group of community college mathematics educators.

The workshop was held at the American Mathematical Association of Two-Year Colleges (AMATYC) conference in Washington, D.C. on November 21. Karen and Annette used cooperative learning techniques during the workshop to demonstrate how to use cooperative learning techniques to teach mathematics. Participants discussed the benefits of cooperative learning and designed cooperative learning activities. At the end of the presentation, Karen and Annette distributed a paper with background notes on cooperative learning and their own classroom tested activities for a variety of courses including algebra, math for elementary school teachers, statistics, precalculus, and calculus.

At the same conference, Mathematics Department Chair Peter Collinge co-led the Department/Division Chairs’ Colloquium.
