Summer Hours and Telecommuting Pilot Update

Summer 2022 Hours

Consistent with summer 2021, the College wishes to provide an option for MCC employees to rest and recharge by shifting the College's operating hours on Fridays to 8:45 a.m. - 1:00 p.m., beginning Friday, June 3 (Friday after commencement) and ending July 29 (last Friday in July).  This is voluntary, not mandatory.

Employees who wish to shift their regular schedule to the summer hours schedule must work out an approved schedule with their department head to work additional hours during the week, enabling them to leave at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays.

Employees who do not wish to participate in the summer hours schedule, or whose specific job duties or departmental responsibilities prevent them from working additional hours during the week so that they may leave at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays will continue to work their regular schedule.

There are two College holidays that fall during the summer hours period.  Monday, June 20, the College is closed in observance of Juneteenth.  Monday, July 4, the College is closed in observance of Independence Day.  During these weeks, employees participating in the summer hours schedule must work the additional hours Tuesday - Thursday (instead of Monday - Thursday), in order to leave at 1:00 p.m. on Friday.

The above summer hours schedule does not prevent supervisors and employees from discussing potential schedule adjustments in alignment with existing contractual language and consultation with the respective Vice President who oversees the department, so long as any proposed adjustments do not disrupt departmental operations or negatively impact student access to information and resources necessary for their success.

Department heads are asked to communicate with their respective Cabinet member about which employees in their area are participating in summer hours no later than Friday, June 3.

Here are some FAQs and responses:

  1. If everyone in my department wants to participate in summer hours, do we have to identify one person to stay until 4:45 p.m. every Friday?  No.  All department employees may adjust their schedules to allow them to leave at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays since the College's public-facing operating hours end at 1:00 p.m.
  2. What if I'm the only one in my department who wants to participate in summer hours?  Work out an approved schedule with your department head that allows you to work additional hours during the week so that you can leave at 1:00 p.m. on Fridays.  Your colleagues who are not participating in summer hours will continue to work their regular schedules, i.e., they will not work additional hours during the week and they will leave at their regular time on Fridays.
  3. I'd like to opt in to summer hours.  What if I use accrued time (Sick, Personal, or Vacation) on a Friday during Summer Hours.  Do I still have to use 7 hours if I work a 35-hour week?  8 hours if I work a 40-hour week?  No.  You only need to use the number of hours that you are scheduled to work under your summer hours schedule for Fridays.
  4. I'm one of only a couple people in my department who are working our normal schedule and not opting into the summer hours schedule.  What are we supposed to do on Friday afternoons?  Work with your supervisor to identify potential projects or assignments within your department and job title that you may complete on Friday afternoons after 1:00 p.m. when public-facing operations and services cease.

Telecommuting Pilot

The pilot is scheduled to end at the end of this month (May 2022).  In February 2022, the College community provided feedback via a Qualtrics survey created by a joint working group made up of representatives from the FA, CSEA, and Human Resources. The February 2022 survey results support the continuation of a telecommuting option at MCC.

As the President and Cabinet make final decisions about the continuation of a telecommuting option in conjunction with FA, CSEA, and Human Resources, we invite the College community a final opportunity to provide feedback to your respective department head prior to May 11, if possible.  Department heads are asked to communicate this feedback to the respective Vice President prior to May 12.  There is no requirement to submit additional feedback; nor is there a required format to collect or submit feedback.  It is suggested that department heads schedule a brief staff meeting to allow the opportunity for dialogue, or invite staff members to provide feedback via email.

It is anticipated that those who wish to apply to continue telecommuting, apply to start telecommuting, or reapply to telecommute during the summer hours will do so via an electronic form.  Telecommuting requests, like requests to participate in summer hours, and requests to use accrued time off, require approval and will be evaluated through the lens of whether approval of the request will result in disruption to departmental operations or negatively impact student access to information and resources necessary for their success.
