Rochester Biomedical Experience Poster Session

In late June, nine Rochester-area students began the Rochester Biomedical Experience at Monroe Community College. On Thursday, Aug. 10, the students — the second cohort to enter the program -- will present posters reflecting what they learned over a summer “exploration” session. Please stop by the Flynn Campus Center Atrium from noon to 2 pm on Thursday and meet the students, who will start their freshman year next month.

The biomedical scholars include, Bakari McAllister, The Aquinas Institute of Rochester; Mohamed Mohamed, East High School; Anil More, Thomas Jefferson High School; Brianca Parker, Wilson Magnet High School; Brenda Ramos, Wilson Magnet High School; Mayra Rodriguez, East High School; Jocelyn Santiago, East High School; LaShay Sewell, School of Applied Technology at Edison; and Beniam Yeataihe, School Without Walls.

Associate Professor Paul Wakem, Ph.D., Biology, serves as the principal investigator for the grant program and helped the students transition to college during the summer program. Joann Santos and Shirley Rodriquez from MCC's Collegiate Science and Technology Entry (CUES) program also provide program support.

The Rochester Biomedical Experience is funded by a $624,000 grant from the National Institutes of Health as part of the Bridges to the Baccalaureate program. Participants will complete their associate degree at MCC and then transfer to RIT to finish their bachelor’s degree in a biomedical field. The program serves as a pipeline for talented, minority students who otherwise may not have the opportunity to obtain a bachelor’s degree.
