Board of Trustees Approves Transportation Fee

On Monday, the MCC Board of Trustees approved a $75 transportation fee that will be required of all full- and part-time students*, effective with the fall 2019 semester. The fee supports a new transportation program covering campus parking and use of Regional Transit Service (RTS) bus services during the academic year.

The board's vote took place after the Student Government Association and the Student Events and Governance Association in March adopted resolutions supporting implementation of the fee.

The transportation program aims to give MCC students greater flexibility in their commutes depending on their needs and situation, making it convenient for them to get to their classes, off-campus employment, and personal appointments.

Currently, a $75-per-semester parking fee covers the cost of an MCC parking permit, authorizing a student's parking at all MCC locations. The parking fee will be replaced by the new transportation fee. Beginning in August 2019, the $75 transportation fee will cover the cost of parking at all MCC locations and unlimited RTS bus rides during the academic year.

Students who qualify for federal financial aid, scholarships, grants, loans and other resources available through MCC can use those resources to offset the cost of the new transportation fee.

*Some students--including those who take all their classes online or at the Public Safety Training Facility--will not be assessed the transportation fee and will not be eligible for the program.

Students who intend to park at any MCC location must register their vehicles with Parking Services < https://www.monroecc.edu/depts/parking/>, as they have in the past. Those who intend to ride the bus must have a valid MCC ID. An MCC ID card functions as a Universal Pass (U-Pass), allowing students to ride any RTS bus at any time during the academic year--including weekends, college breaks (including Thanksgiving and the December/January holidays), and intersession. Students must swipe their MCC ID card when they board the bus.

MCC's transportation program will not cover summer sessions. During this period, students can access bus transportation by paying regular RTS fares ($1 per ride). Summer parking permits are available online.

Additional details of the transportation program will be announced as they become available.
