Article on MCC's Efforts to Increase Mental Health Support for Students

In the Rochester Business Journal's Dec. 11 issue, MCC was among area colleges interviewed for the article "Colleges shift focus to prioritize students' mental health as pandemic wears on."

Dr. Aubrey Zamiara, director of MCC's Counseling Center and Disability Services, discussed the different ways MCC and SUNY system engage students during the pandemic.

"We are thinking creatively about how we can support our students and take care of each other," she said. "Now more than ever, we have to find ways to stay connected in a disconnected world."

Existing efforts and new initiatives include:

-- Video telecounseling.

-- Virtual drop-in coping circles.

-- Connection to resources in the local community/state where students reside.

-- Promotion of mental health days.

-- Integration of mental health wellness into classes.

-- Virtual suicide prevention symposium, free to SUNY students and employees.

-- Peer-to-peer network hotline for all SUNY students.
