Celebrate Saint Patrick's Day Early with Celtic Society

Looking to start celebrating Saint Patrick’s Day a little early? Then join Celtic Society and Phi Theta Kappa on Tuesday, 13 March for a screening and discussion of THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY.

Set in Ireland just after the end of World War I, THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY dramatizes a definitive, turbulent moment in modern Irish history. In the film, two Irish brothers, Damien (played by Cillian Murphy) and Teddy, join in a dangerous and violent fight against the British Empire. The Irish fighters’ bold tactics bring the British to the breaking point, and both sides agree to a peace treaty.  Unfortunately, the terms of the treaty are unacceptable to many Irish, and civil war erupts, pitting families, who recently fought side by side, against each other.

Following the screening, Irish Studies scholar Fionnuala Regan will lead discussion and help us better understand the history behind the film. Please join us at 6 p.m. on Tuesday, 13 March in 12-113 for what will be an entertaining, informative, and FREE event.
