Mini Maker Faire Grows Upward Bound Possibilities

Ever wondered how robots are constructed, how community murals are painted, or how comedy improv troops make up scenes on the fly? Eight Upward Bound students got answers to those questions and more at the Rochester Mini Maker Faire.

Filled with more than 80 booths of different types of makers, the Faire featured professionals from art, computer programming, engineering, and other fields as well. The students spent the first portion of the Faire volunteering as liaisons to the makers or working in the booths, and then had time to explore the Faire. They even had a chance to do some making of their own, as each student learned how to solder metal in constructing a small LED robot.

Northeast freshman Isabel Hernandez loved the robotics and computer programming booths she visited: “I learned about Hummingbird, a type of computer programming that turns arts and crafts into little robots. I even got to learn how to make my own, and finally made it work after a bit of struggle.” We will be on the lookout for more events like this that give students a vision for a great future career!
